D&L Oil Tools introduces the patented ProTension Safe Tension Tool (STT), which was designed as a safety tool to eliminate the potential for loss of well control when pulling a tubing string into tension. Additionally, it allows operators to safely set tubing anchors and other downhole tools in tension.
The ProTension STT is ideally suited for oil wells that will eventually require artificial lift. The tool ensures continuous well control when setting the production string in tension. When installed between the tubing hanger and production tubing, tension can be pulled into the work string without removing the blowout preventer (BOP) or overstretching the tubing.
The ProTension STT eliminates the need to use Low Line or Shallow Well Slips and helps protect personnel from high-tension loads. Once the tubing hanger is landed (isloating the annulus), tension is pulled into the tubing string and safely locked into place without losing well control. The ProTension STT allows for free rotation of the tubing for setting downhole tools in the string.
MAXIMUM PRODUCTION&MINIMUM RISK
Ideally suited for long reach horizontal, multi-stage stimulated oil wells that will eventually require artificial lift, ProTension? Safe Tension Tool ensures continuous well control when setting the production string in tension. When installed between the tubing hanger and production tubing, tension can be applied to the work string without removing the blowout preventers (BOPs) or overstretching the tubing.
Once the tubing hanger is landed, isolating the annulus, tension is pulled into the tubing string and safely locked into place without losing well control.
Production tubing length is calculated with * ft pony on top and the anchor is set. The BOPs are then removed and tubing is “over pulled” and held with low line slips (no weight rating). The * ft pony is removed and a tubing hanger added to string and landed into bowl. Once complete, the BOPs are reconnected.
GETTING STARTED
It is recommended that you disassemble and inspect the tool, in most cases, to ensure parts have not been damaged during shipping. Once properly reassembled, our pre-installation inspection procedures include tightening/torqueing all connections properly before operating the tool. When redressing the tool, we recommend replacement of all seals, elements, o-rings, shear screws, etc. D&L can provide redress kits and other replacement part information, as needed.
Make up the tension tool between the tubing hanger and the production tubing and fully extend the tension tool. Then, run the tubing string downhole until the tubing hanger is landed. Mark the position of the tubing hanger on the tubing, then pick up on the tubing and set the anchor, packer and other downhole tools. Set down the tubing to land the tubing hanger and put the tubing in compression.
Assemble the downhole spear and spear extension to the length required to locate the spear below the tension tool. Lower the spear into the tubing below the tension tool and set the speak by rotating to the left until resistance is met. Pick up on the spear to ensure it is engaged and the tension tool is moving.
Pick up on the tension tool until the desired tension is achieved. While holding the tension tool, rotate a */* right-hand turn at the tension tool to engage the nearest J-slot. Set down the tension tool until all weight from the production tubing is released. Then rotate to the right at the spear to release and remove the spear from the well.
RELEASING PROCEDURES
Assemble the downhole spear and the spear extension to the length required to locate the spear below the tension tool. Lower the spear into the tubing below the tension tool and rotate the spear to the left until slight torque is encountered. Pick up on the spear to confirm engagement.
Next, pick up on the tension tool and rotate a */* left-hand turn at the tension tool to move J-pin out of the J-slot and set down the tubing to fully extend the tension tool and all weight from the production tubing is released. Rotate the spear to the right to release and remove the spear from the well. Lastly, unset anchor, packer and other downhole tools and remove from the well.?
HIGH RESERVOIR PRESSURE APPLICATION
For high reservoir pressure applications, the ProTension tool offers a long-reach horizontal for multi-stage stimulated oil wells. That will require eventual artificial lift so production tubing to be set in tension. Additionally, well completion requires snubbing units to snub “tubing light” production string with tubing anchor.
The Safe Tension Tool allows tubing string to be put in tension during live well conditions.
Case study
A Permian Basin E&P customer sought way(s) to reduce the operational impact to prospective frac interference wells before, during and after infield hydraulic fracturing operations.
Conventionally, landing production tubing in hanger without tension and utilizing a production tree on the wellhead to withstand the pending hydraulic pressure to an existing legacy oil well wellhead brings the following undesirables: *) Incrementally added cost post frac interference to replace production tree to lower pressure rod tree and to place tubing string in tension; and *) Oil production is interrupted for a prolonged period of time.
Alternatively, ProTension is placed in the production tubing string beneath the hanger pre-frac. It is actuated to place the tubing string in tension – the well is producing right up until frac operations are to commence. It allows for flanged high pressure rod ***.******.***.s to be used during frac operations and production can immediately be brought back online post frac.
The Permian Basin E&P customer chose to utilize the ProTension system within their frac interference operation as it:
CONCLUSIONGreatly reduced oil production deferment
Required minimal cost to bring well back to production
Safely and optimally provided a means to operate within a high-pressure environment
